New tech to identify best locations for floating PV

New tech to identify best locations for floating PV Norway s Glint Solar and the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute have developed an algorithm that is able to automatically calculate wave heights and wind directions at potential locations for floating PV arrays. It considers the geometry of the water surface as well as 40 years of data on wind conditions. The Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) and Norway-based technology company Glint Solar have jointly developed a technique for the assessment of wind and wave conditions at locations where floating PV arrays have to be deployed. We have made a model that uses satellite-derived wind data and .

The Weather Network - Why scientists in Norway are deliberately triggering avalanches

Why scientists in Norway are deliberately triggering avalanches Digital Writers Saturday, May 1st 2021, 7:02 pm - The researchers hope to learn more about how avalanches start and progress, leading to safer infrastructure and buildings. Normally if you re in the mountains, the last thing you want is an avalanche, unless you re trying to pre-emptively trigger one to make the area safer for hikers and skiers. But scientists in Norway are actively seeking to trigger such snowslides, not for safety reasons, but for science. The avalanche above, shot in the Stryn region of Norway, was one such experiment. Set off by explosives, it sent some 10,000 cubic metres of snow roaring down the mountainside, at speeds as high as 180 km/h.

Toxic fluorocarbons - Not just in ski waxes

E-Mail Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in ski wax have been receiving a lot of attention recently, but waxes constitute only a limited part of the problem of the PFAS group of toxicants. PFAS are a large group of man-made fluorocarbon toxicants, and you are most likely full of them. The toxic substances don t break down and instead accumulate, both in nature and in your body. Due to their extensive use, humans and animals all over the world are continuously exposed to PFAS, says Håkon Austad Langberg, a PhD candidate at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) who has studied several of them in the last few years.

Norway Death Toll From Landslide Climbs as Search Continues

Norwegian Rescuers Find More Bodies From Landslide Site Near Oslo Bloomberg 1/2/2021 Stephen Treloar (Bloomberg) Norwegian rescuers have now recovered four bodies at a village not far from the nation’s capital hit by a landslide on Wednesday, with 6 people still missing. The latest three discoveries were made in the same area at a building about 100 meters into the site, Knut Hammer, head of the police operation, told reporters late on Saturday. Rescuers are still searching at full capacity for survivors under difficult conditions. The quick-clay slide happened about 20 kilometers north of Oslo and follows a month of record rainfall. About 1,000 people were evacuated from the area after the landslide devastated large parts of the village.
