(Tribune News Service) A request for federal funding for the project to connect the Fort Dix and Lakehurst sections of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst has gone before a new committee. U.S. Rep. Andy Kim (D-03) recently submitted an $8 million request to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure for the Route 539 overpass project. The committee request, Kim said, is potentially a new path toward funding the critical infrastructure project. The trouble we ve had before, there s continued disagreement over who is going to pay for part of it, Kim said. It s holding up a significant issue . I decided to try and come at this from a different direction.

(Tribune News Service) The 16-year-old boy allegedly involved in the slaying of a Fort Drum soldier in December is accused of pointing a gun at the victim s head while he and another soldier drove him more than four hours to a wooded area in northern New Jersey before the victim was shot in the head. The teen and another Fort Drum soldier, Pvt. Jamaal Mellish, 23, are accused of abducting Cpl. Hayden A. Harris, 20, in Glen Park and driving him some 270 miles in the corporal s 2017 Chevrolet Silverado pickup to Byram Township, N.J., after the soldiers had apparently argued about swapping vehicles.

(Tribune News Service) A former South Bound Brook police officer who alleged he was discriminated against because of post traumatic stress disorder he suffered after being injured while serving in Iraq years earlier has settled his lawsuit against the department for $100,000, according to court documents. News of the settlement, which was reached late last month, was first reported by TransparencyNJ.com. Kevin J. Klink, of the Skillman section of Montgomery, alleged in the lawsuit two different chiefs created a hostile work environment for him with the second forcing him to retire.

(Tribune News Service) Thanks to a new law requiring nursing homes to increase staffing levels, 78 nurses, aides and other employees will be hired at the three state-run veterans homes, where residents and families say short-staffing contributed to dire conditions and high death counts throughout the pandemic. Interim Adjutant General and Col. Lisa J. Hou announced the new hires at a budget hearing this week, describing it as part of a plan “to enhance current programs or initiate new improvements.not just for FY2022 but looking forward to the years to come.”
