In an effort to address potential attendance issues following a year of virtual and hybrid learning, Buncombe County Schools changed its student attendance policy for the 2021-22 school year.
The Buncombe County Board of Education on June 3 approved an updated attendance policy allowing students 14 absences per year before being subject to punishment or intervention. The previous attendance policy allowed for 10 absences per year.
BCS Director of Student Services David Thompson said changes to the attendance policy stemmed from the district anticipating attendance issues next school year when students are back to being consistently in-person after the COVID-19 pandemic forced virtual learning.
