The public body voted 5-4 to approve a $200,000 contract for the city’s federal litigation against the Detroit Will Breathe movement.
Detroit City Council approved a $200,000 expenditure that will fund a counter-lawsuit against the city’s Black Lives Matter protesters in a 5-4 vote. City attorneys are suing demonstrators associated with the Detroit Will Breathe movement, claiming they engaged in a civil conspiracy during last summer’s marches. But the protestors sued the city first. Their federal complaint alleges the Detroit Police Department used excessive force to stop demonstrators from exercising their First Amendment rights. A federal judge issued a restraining order against DPD’s use of rubber bullets, chokehold and tear gas against peaceful protesters following the protester lawsuit.
Detroit Prosecutors Fail to Show Evidence Against Arrested BLM Protesters, Prompting Black Judge to Toss Charges Against 30 People
A Detroit judge dismissed criminal charges against dozens of Black Lives Matter protesters who were arrested during anti-police brutality marches over the summer.
Citing prosecutors’ lack of evidence and discovery, 36th District Court of Detroit Judge Larry Williams, Jr. tossed out cases filed against 30 protesters during a Jan. 14 hearing.
“Every defendant has the right to due process, and you cannot have a trial by ambush,” said Arnie Chambers, one of the lead defense attorneys in the cases. “So if they’re not going to properly provide the evidence that they’re required to provide to defendants, the proper remedy is dismissal.”

Detroit’s white mayor recently acknowledged the federal government has tricked Black Americans before.
He then propped up the left sleeve of his yellow shirt and was pricked in the upper arm with a needle that injected the emergency coronavirus vaccine.
This is different, Mayor Mike Duggan said. “It’s the right thing.”
