Volusia County s new surge in development raising concerns

DAYTONA BEACH Less than a decade ago, the local economy here was still in the grips of the Great Recession with real estate development activity practically at a standstill. New development was largely viewed as a sign of hope and optimism. Not anymore. Today, a flurry of new home construction, apartment projects and commercial development throughout Volusia County has some citizens and elected officials alarmed that area is quickly becoming over-developed. Volusia County Chair Jeff Brower is one of them. The flood gates have come open, said Brower while standing on a grassy field along LPGA Boulevard that is set to become the site of a retail center called Tymber Creek Village. The pendulum has swung the other way. Now, it s at the point where people daily are telling me Stop all growth. We can t stop all growth, but what we could do is try to slow things down. It s like we ve been on a sprint.

When we started coming out of the lockdown last year, we burst out of it, said Toby Tobin, a Realtor with Grand Living Commercial Realty in Palm Coast. Starting in June, building permits for new homes were off the charts.

Sunburn — The morning read of what’s hot in Florida politics — 4.14.21 A reminder: It’s Seersucker Day in the Capitol. — Gov. Ron DeSantis’ COVID-19 response may be getting dragged through the mud by national media, but a new survey shows Florida voters are fans. Polling firm Cygnal surveyed 800 likely general election voters in Florida and found 60% believe DeSantis has done a good job navigating the state through the pandemic. That beats the 58% approval earned by the Joe Biden administration and the 49% approval for Donald Ron DeSantis gets high marks for his COVID-19 response strategy. Floridians aren’t just fans of DeSantis’ plans; they’re fans of the man himself, handing him a plus-17 job approval rating halfway through his first term. The media, which has taken to thrashing DeSantis a few times in recent weeks, earned a minus-14 approval rating from the same set of voters.
