Grant to bring ADA-compliant changes to the downtown Winchendon area

WINCHENDON Residents can expect to see some big changes all across the downtown Toy Town area. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) recently announced the next recipients of the next round of funding from the Baker-Polito administration’s Shared Winter Streets and Spaces Program, which includes Winchendon. The town will receive $243,600 to create a safe, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant walking route connecting Murdock High School, Memorial Elementary School, Broadview Assisted Living Center and key bus stops to the downtown commercial district to include high-visibility crosswalks, safety beacons and new ADA-compliant ramps. “We’ve got a lot of sidewalks that are not ADA-compliant,” said Land Use/Planning Clerk Nicole Roberts. “What this grant is helping us do is to connect the area of sidewalks on north Central Street to the downtown area. It will also create safe passage for students who go up to Murdock and the (Memorial School).”

Town of Ipswich awarded $157,850 state grant COURTESY OF THE TOWN OF IPSWICH The town of Ipswich recently announced it has received a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to help create a year-round outdoor dining and gathering space that will help support downtown businesses. The $157,850 grant will fund continuation of the Take-Out Terrace program, which seeks to create a permanent, welcoming space along the nationally-designated Essex Coastal Scenic Byway and the Ipswich River. Plans include crosswalk improvements and additional lighting for safety; bike racks to encourage non-motorized mobility; and way-finding and signage to support downtown commerce. “Thank you to the state Department of Transportation for helping us help our downtown businesses,” Town Manager Anthony Marino said. “This project will give a great look and feel to the community.”
