The biennial election of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) begins today at 9am at Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden hotel in Dhaka.
The vote will continue until 7pm without any break. The turnaround of the voters is good.
The vote is also going on at the BGMEA s regional office in Chattogram. The voters will elect the board of directors of the garment makers platform for 2021-23 tenure.

Forum, the other panel of outgoing BGMEA President Rubana Huq, secured the remaining 11 seats in the elections held on Sunday.
Faruque, a former director, vice-president and senior vice-president of the association, secured 1,204 votes according to the results published at midnight.
He is also serving as consul general of Greece in Dhaka. Abdus Salam Murshedy, former president of the BGMEA, is the coordinator of the Sammilita Parishad panel.

Industrialists have found it difficult to instantly implement emergency measures for the smooth continuation of manufacturing operations after the government suddenly announced a nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The biennial election of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) is underway on Sunday at the Radisson Blu hotel in Dhaka.
Two panels are contesting the powerful trade body s election this year. Earlier, Shadhinata Parishad merged with the Sammilita Parishad led by Managing Director of Giant Group Faruque Hassan. On the other hand, Chairman of Hannan Group ABM Shamsuddin is leading the Forum panel as its candidate for president. Current BGMEA president Dr Rubana Huq is contesting as a panel member of Forum.
Former Vice President of BGMEA Mohammad Nasir said a total of 14 polling booths have been set up to cast votes from 9am to 7pm - an extra 3 hours over the usual to allow COVID-19 health protocols to be maintained.

Faruque Hassan-led Sammilito Parishad won the biennial election to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association yesterday.
Faruque s panel won 24 posts of directors, while his rival ABM Shamsuddin-led Forum panel secured 11 director posts. I thank all my voters. I congratulate my members who voted for me. I want to unite the BGMEA to face the challenges and develop the sector, Faruque said in his immediate reaction after the announcement of the election result. I will address the challenges the sector has been facing from the fallouts of the Covid-19, Hassan told The Daily Star.
