Death toll in Narayanganj launch capsize rises to 27

DHAKA, Apr 5, 2021 (BSS) – The rescue operation has been wrapped up today after the fire service retrieved 27 bodies so far from the Munshiganj bound launch that capsized in the Shitalakkya River in Narayanganj with over 50 passengers on Sunday evening.
“The rescue vessel ‘Prattoy’ tugged out the sunken launch on the river bank through crane and rescued the dead bodies by turns after searching inside the launch,” confirmed Commodore M Sadeque, Chairman of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).
The rescue salvage operation has been declared abandoned, said the official.
Quoting fire service personnel BSS Narayanganj correspondent added that the fire service diver’s team along with the coast guard launched the rescue operation at around 5.30am this morning and rescued twenty-two more bodies of male-female and children from the wreckage .

The incident took place on Sunday evening at Narayanganj district, about 16 km southeast of Dhaka. While five bodies were recovered on Sunday, rescuers retrieved 22 bodies on Monday as a salvage vessel pulled out the launch with the help of a huge crane around midday, rescue officials said. The rescue team comprised officials from Navy, Coast Guard, fire service and police. The salvage operation is ended, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Chairman Commodore Golam Sadek told newsmen here, while live TV footages showed wailing family members and relatives of the victims crowding at the scene. The passenger vessel, ML Sabit Al Hasan, sank after colliding with the cargo ship, SKL-3, at the mouth of the Syedpur Koyla Ghat on the Shitalakkhya River in Munshiganj. The launch was en route Munshiganj.
