A day after one faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) demanded a ban on the transmission of Qatar-based Al Jazeera television channel in Bangladesh, another faction of the organisation issued a statement expressing their shock at the demand.
The statement said leaders of BFUJ and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) could not believe that such a demand could come from an organisation involved with the welfare of journalism.
The statement said that the demand to ban Al Jazeera was vehemently opposed by the President of BFUJ M Abdullah and Secretary General Nurul Amin Rokon, as well as the chairperson of DUJ Kader Gani Chowdhury and its General Secretary Md Shahidul Islam.

Death anniv of journalist Altaf Mahmud today The New Nation

The fifth death anniversary of noted journalist Altaf Mahmud, also former President of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), will be observed today.
Marking the day, his family members will arrange different programmes, including doa and milad mahfil at his family residence in the city, his son Asif Mahmud Topu, senior reporter of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), said.
Food will also be distributed among the poor, he added.
Mahmud served as the President and Secretary General of BFUJ and DUJ for different periods.
He started his career in journalism in 1970s. Mahmud worked as the chief reporter of a weekly journal Saptahik Khabar for a long time. Besides, he served different newspapers, including the Dainik Khobar , the Daily Destiny and the Daily Orhonitir Kagoj in different capacities.

DHAKA, Jan 09, 2021 (BSS)- Awami League (AL) Joint Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif today said BNP leaders are criticizing the massive development of the incumbent government due to their (BNP) incompetence and failure.
Addressing the BNP leaders, he said, “In your time (tenure), corruption was institutionalized. Your leader Tarique Rahman introduced the ‘commission trade’ by constructing Hawa Bhaban. BNP leaders are now criticizing the development of the government because of their incompetence and failure.”
Hanif made the remarks at a discussion organized by Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sontan-Projanmaat Oikya Jote at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity in city’s Segun Bagicha area.
