The Daily Star ICT Awards 2020
Over the last five decades the export-led economy of Bangladesh has grown mainly riding on the apparel and textile sectors, because of a lack of product diversity. Now ICT and IT-enabled services have emerged as the most successful export products of the country as thousands of local experts, engineers and entrepreneurs in the sector have been thriving, defying all odds in business to serve both local and international markets. A silent revolution in ICT and IT-enabled services has been taking place because of relentless strides by local entrepreneurs. The Daily Star has been proudly recognising these unsung and silent ICT heroes since 2016. This year, seven such heroes and companies receive The Daily Star ICT Awards for their outstanding performance and contribution in this field.

Five firms and two individuals were awarded at the 5th The Daily Star ICT Awards yesterday for elevating the industry to a new height defying all odds and even distressing times like the coronavirus pandemic, creating a solid footing and establishing a footprint in global markets.
The country s leading English language newspaper and the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) handed the prestigious awards to the winners at a virtual ceremony in the presence of Planning Minister MA Mannan and VEON Group Co-Chief Executive Sergi Herrero.

The fifth The Daily Star ICT Awards will take place tomorrow with the objective to recognise champions in the field of ICT and encourage entrepreneurs to work for bringing about positive changes in society.
This year, the awards will be given in five categories along with recognising an ICT pioneer who has explored the untapped industry of ICT and paved the path of excellence for the future leaders.
The event will take place virtually and be broadcasted live from The Daily Star s official Facebook page named dailystarnews.
Planning Minister MA Mannan will grace the event as chief guest while Sergi Herrero, group co-chief executive officer of VEON, a communications and digital services provider, will be keynote speaker at the show.
Give IT freelancers loans, credit cards

Bangladesh Bank yesterday asked banks to provide loans and credit cards to freelancers focused on information technology to promote such self-employed professionals who are not necessarily committed to a particular employer long-term.
Freelancers bearing a virtual identity card issued by the information and communication technology (ICT) division will be eligible for the facilities in tandem, according to a central bank notice.
There are around 6.50 lakh IT freelancers collectively earning nearly $200 million per year, according to the Bangladesh Association of Software
and Information Services (BASIS), a national trade body for the software and IT-enabled service industry.

Green Delta Insurance Company (GDIC) has introduced an artificial intelligence (AI)-based mobile application which is the first of its kind in the non-life insurance segment featured with instant account opening and policy purchase tool online.
Using the app titled InsuMama , policy holders can also pay their premiums online and renewal of policies on a single tap on the digital platform as the officials informed at a webinar on Sunday.
Dr M Mosharraf Hossain FCA, chairman of Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA), was the chief guest, while Sheikh Kabir Hossain, president of Bangladesh Insurance Association, was the guest of honour, and Syed Almas Kabir, president of Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), was special guest at the inauguration event of the new application.
