Writ petition filed against tree cutting at Suhrawardy Udyan UNB 9th May, 2021 09:18:23 A writ petition was filed at the High Court on Sunday to stop tree cutting at historical Suhrawardy Udyan in the pretext of beautification. On behalf of six organisations and an individual, advocate Minhajul Haque Chowdhury submitted the writ petition. The petitioners are - Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA), Association for Land Reforms and Development (ALRD), Nijera Kori, Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST), Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA), Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) and architect Mobassher Hossain. Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice SM Monirujjaman’s bench may hold a hearing on the writ petition on May 19.

The retrenchment indicates that the stimulus package could not guarantee jobs as many factories terminated workers. The factories had agreed that they would not lay off anybody while availing the stimulus fund. The government has allocated Tk 10,500 crore to the garment industry as the stimulus package to help them pay wages and allowances to their workers since the crisis hit the country in March last year.

In response to two writ petitions, the HC asked the deputy commissioner and the superintendent of police of Chattogram to submit their inquiry reports to it in 45 days. S Alam Group has also been ordered to submit a report on what measures it has taken to compensate the families of the deceased and injured and also for their treatment to the HC in 45 days.
