JS body for reopening of closed jute mills UNB 24th December, 2020 07:15:58 The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour and Employment Ministry on Thursday recommended making the closed state-owned jute mills functional through modernisation with local and foreign financing. The parliamentary panel requested the government to take necessary steps in this regard, said an official release of the Parliament Secretariat. It also suggested taking effective steps to revive the state-owned Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) and make it a profitable organisation. At the meeting, the committee also recommended providing overall cooperation to the workers of the closed jute mills in amending their national identity card and paying all the dues of the terminated workers by withdrawing or settling the cases on an emergency basis.

State enterprises profit falls to five-year low

BPC is not alone. Twenty state-owned enterprises, out of a total of 52 covered in the review, saw a decrease in net profit in the last fiscal year. Four turned unprofitable. The SoEs made a total profit of Tk 7,519.31 crore, which was Tk 10,677.23 crore in the FY19, down 29.57 per cent year-on-year. This is the lowest profit since the FY16. Thirteen SoEs, including those in the power sector, made positive growth in their profit on the back of an increase in the price of electricity and related services. According to BPC sources, the import and sales of petroleum products dropped in the FY20 compared to a year ago.
