Fidesz Lawmaker: V4 to Fight Jointly for Post-Pandemic Position in Europe
The Visegrád Group countries have the opportunity to cooperate in the fight for the region’s position in a post-pandemic Europe, the head of parliament’s foreign affairs committee told an international conference on Saturday.
Zsolt Németh told a discussion at the Europe of the Carpathians conference that the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia were the engines of infrastructure development in the larger central European region. The Hungarian stretch of the Via Carpathia international road network is slated to be completed this year, he said.
Another important issue will be the region’s ability to bounce back after the coronavirus pandemic, and the position it can acquire in the European Union’s industry policy, its green agreement, and in key economic areas like digitalization and the rehabilitation of production lines, Németh told the conference held in Przemysl, southern Poland, which h
Europe’s biggest political group, the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP), has declined to comment on a letter of support Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán sent to Italy’s nationalist party Brothers of Italy, member of another political family, where he cites their shared “Christian and conservative values”.
In the letter to the Brothers of Italy, a member of the European Conservatives and Reformists Party (ECR) and the only opposition party to Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s government, Orbán asks for cooperation.
The letter was addressed to Giorgia Meloni, the leader of Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d’Italia), and president of the ECR. “We need reliable battle comrades who have a common vision of the world and give similar answers to the challenges of our times,” Orbán wrote.
The Centrist Democrat International (CDI) has adopted a resolution condemning the Hungarian left-wing parties’ cooperation with nationalist Jobbik and calling for zero tolerance of far-right, xenophobic and anti-Semitic views, Zsolt Németh, the Fidesz head of parliament’s foreign affairs committee, said on Friday.
The CDI’s leadership passed the resolution at Fidesz’s request in a meeting on Thursday evening, Németh told MTI.
The document condemns Hungary’s left-wing parties for their alliance with Jobbik, stressing that the CDI considers cooperation with “extremist, xenophobic, racist and anti-Semitic” political forces unacceptable, Németh said, arguing that such cooperation hurts ethnic and religious minorities, including Europe’s Jewish community.
