Punjab s Health Department has ordered termination of services of around 1,000 protesting contractual employees working under the National Health Mission (NHM) for failing to return to their duties amid the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic. Around 9,000 contractual employees including paramedical staff working under the NHM Punjab had been on strike, seeking regularisation of their jobs and increase in salaries.

Chandigarh [India], May 9 (ANI): Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu on Sunday appealed to the employees of the National Health Mission to resume their duties from Monday morning in the larger public interest as the state reels under the effects of the second wave of COVID-19.
He also stated that if they fail to do so, stricter actions will be taken against them under The Disaster Management Act.
The contractual employees under the NHM have been on an indefinite strike and demanded the state government for regularising jobs. They have staged protests at hospitals amid the rising COVID infection in the state.

Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], May 4 (ANI): Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu on Tuesday said that the coronavirus infection has started to spread to the rural areas because of which the positivity rate and the number of deaths are increasing in the state.
Speaking to ANI, Sidhu said: The situation of Punjab is similar to the country. The positivity rate and the number of deaths are increasing in the state. People from Delhi, Haryana and other states are shifting to Punjab and this is the main reason for a surge in cases in the state.
Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Assam, West Bengal, Punjab, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh have said the inoculation drive may get delayed by weeks or even months.
