Former Moodbidri MLA and former Minister K. Abhayachandra Jain and former members of Haleyangadi Gram Panchayat on Tuesday sought urgent intervention of the State government to protect the pristine Sasihiltu beach, which is gradually getting eroded following sea erosion over the years.
The beach, which is about 7 km from the Haleyangadi Junction on the NH 66, has been promoted as a destination for surfing. With the beach being close to confluence of Nandini and Shambhavi rivers with the sea, the waves were found to be moderate and conducive for surfing.

In a bid to protect government land from land sharks, the Revenue Department has decided to fence the government land that has been freed from encroachers.
Announcing this in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, Revenue Minister R. Ashok said Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa had assured a grant of ₹100 crore for the Revenue Department to undertake fencing work. Mr. Ashok said this would help prevent freed land from being encroached again. He also announced that the government would try to auction such parcels recovered from land sharks.

An instance wherein a gram panchayat that was duty-bound to protect the environment itself indulging in environment pollution has come to light in Hejmadi in Udupi district where solid waste from the neighbouring Padubidri Gram Panchayat limits was being dumped on the banks of the Shambhavi.

Ujire : , Dec 20 (IANS) Ujire Janya , an organic manure produced from wet waste collected from nearly 6,000 houses in Ujire gram panchayat, which has a population of 18,000 in Karnataka, is likely to hit the market soon, said Ujire gram panchayat (GP) Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) Prakash Shetty.

Ujire (Karnataka), December 20 Ujire Janya , an organic manure produced from wet waste collected from nearly 6,000 houses in Ujire gram panchayat, which has a population of 18,000 in Karnataka, is likely to hit the market soon, said Ujire gram panchayat (GP) Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) Prakash Shetty.
Besides this, the GP is also planning to set up a plastic recycle plant which would produce foot mats and interlock tiles which could be used at garages, Shetty told IANS from Ujire.
Ujire Gram Panchayat is part of Belthangadi taluk in Dakshin Kannada district and a town near Dharmasthala, which is at the banks of the river Nethravathi. Ujire is an important junction for travellers in this region as it connects to another temple town Hornadu situated at the banks of river Bhadra in Chaikkamagaluru district.
