FWC Releases 2020 Boating Accident Statistical Report  With the release of the 2020 Boating Accident Statistical Report, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) encourages boaters to focus on taking the necessary steps for a safer boating experience. “A leading contributor to boating accidents is the operator’s inattention or failure to maintain a proper lookout, said Lt. Normal teen one of 2 crew members killed in Iowa State club boating accident

AMES, Iowa — A 19-year-old from Normal was one of two killed when an Iowa State student crew club s boat capsized last week.  The president of Iowa State s student crew club said winds that had been forecast to remain low picked up suddenly, causing the boat to capsize before the crew could return to shore. Derek Nanni, a freshman from Normal, and Yaakov Ben-David, 20, a sophomore from Washington, D.C., drowned in the accident March 28 on Little Wall Lake in Hamilton County. Crew Club President Alexis Aurandt said the forecast that day called for 11-14 mph winds that would gust up to 17 mph later in the morning. The crew s rules say the club should not row if winds are greater 14 mph, so members decided to drive to the lake to check conditions, she said Saturday in a statement to WHO-TV.
