UMN Crookston s degrees impact NW MN; graduates staying for workforce

Times Report Crookston Times     “Our graduates can go anywhere, we have students that come from other areas of the country, those specific to our region, and we have established ourselves as having a strong agriculture program, agronomy programs broadly,” said University of Minnesota Crookston Agronomy Lecturer, Rob Proulx, Ph.D.     But it isn’t just Crookston’s agronomy graduates that have become pretty well embedded in a lot of the different companies in this region, particularly American Crystal Sugar. Proulx said the variety of degrees and, in this case, ag, touches everything.               “One concrete example is American Crystal Sugar Company, and of their Agriculturist staff, something like one-third of those individuals have come through the UMN Crookston’s Agronomy program,” Proulx explained.

American Crystal donates to Crookston High School Industrial Tech

Times Report Crookston Times     American Crystal Sugar recently awarded the Crookston Industrial Technology Department a check for $5,000 to help with the purchase and installation of a CNC Plasma Cutter from Minnesota Based Company, Shop Sabre.  The new CNC Plasma Cutter which uses a software interface to cut metal into a specific size and shape will replace the old Plasma Cutter. Travis Oliver who is an instructor for the Industrial Technology department at the Crookston High School is looking to expand his class offering to include integrated technology.   This will help teach and give students hands on experience so that this will put them in a better position to be successful as soon as they graduate.  It is Oliver’s belief that, “this field is ripe for tremendous growth in the future within many different industries, some of these industries are right here in Crookston”.

Cove youth center gets $5,000 grant from American Crystal Sugar Times Report Crookston Times American Crystal Sugar has awarded the Crookston Youth Foundation a check for $5,000. This will help keep their doors to the The Cove youth center open and get it up and running again as it had been closed due to COVID-19. These funds will be used to help support their mission. This organization has missed out on several fundraising opportunities, specifically their crepes and ice cream fundraisers, which helps keeps the Cove operational. The mission of the Crookston Youth Foundation is to engage all sectors of the Crookston area in encouraging youth to thrive socially and economically, and to fulfill their potential as contributing members of the community.
