In mid-January, science education professor Al Schademan received one of around 2,000 emails sent to faculty, student employees and essential staff at California State University, Chico. The email contained a surprise for Schademan: He would be among the first higher education employees in California to gain coveted access to the coronavirus vaccine.
Within a couple weeks, Schademan was climbing a back stairway at the 298-bed Enloe Medical Center, where in a room above the hospital cafe he received his first shot of the Pfizer vaccine, an adventure he said felt like participating in a covert operation.
News items included:
20% to 30% of fall classes will be in-person or in a hybrid/flex format
Students will have the opportunity to participate in face-to-face activity on a limited basis via clubs and student organizations
Butte County plans to open a vaccination site on-campus to prioritize vaccinating students and faculty
Freshmen enrollment numbers for Spring 2021 decreased by 5%, but transfer applications increased 4%. About 750 new students joined the Wildcat family this semester
Chico State expects to receive around $31 million from the second federal stimulus package approved in December. A minimum of $10 million will go directly to students as emergency aid
Residence halls are expected to see hundreds of students dorm in the fall.
Butte County Jail inmates to receive COVID-19 vaccine
On Jan. 28, inmates at the Butte County Jail started receiving the COVID-19 vaccination.
Butte County Public Health Department provides Butte County Jail with enough vaccinations for 100 inmates.

OROVILLE, Calif. - Butte County Jail inmates will begin to receive the COVID-19 vaccine today, according to the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.
The Butte County Public Health Department provided the jail with enough vaccinations to administer to 100 inmates.

CHICO, Calif. - A group a Butte County citizens came together for a small protest outside of the Butte County Public Health Department in Chico to voice their displeasure over the shut downs. We can t live like this, businesses are shutting down. People are losing their livelihoods, said Norm Saunders, from Paradise. It s not about protecting us it s about controlling us, let s go back to the way things were. We can t live in fear, you have to go on with life.
