District Attorney: Chico State professor Laird Easton has not been charged by his office
Butte County Sheriff s Department charged Dr. Laird McLeod Easton, a professor in the history department, with possession of obscene material containing minors on Jan. 21st. We are still trying to speak with the Butte County Sheriff s Department regarding the charges.

UPDATE: Despite the statement from Chico State,
Action News now checked with District Attorney Mike Ramsey and he says they have not received the case from the Butte County Sheriffs Office. The DA also says, Dr. Easton has bailed out, and they are waiting to see if they have enough evidence to charge him.
Chico State History Professor Laird Easton was arrested by the Butte County Sheriff’s Office Jan. 21 on the charge of possessing child pornography.
Easton, a prominent historian, has been suspended from teaching and campus activities at this time, said Chico State Media Relations Coordinator Sean Murphy.
“We are cooperating with the DA’s investigation and the employee has been suspended from teaching and campus activities until further notice,” Murphy said. “The University encourages anyone with knowledge about this case or any instance of child exploitation or abuse to contact the Butte County District Attorney’s office. Any questions about the charges or ongoing criminal investigation should be directed to the DA’s office.”

OROVILLE, Calif. – A press conference will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. where the Butte County District Attorney, Mike Ramsey, will release a report and conclusions of the officer-involved shooting of Stephen Vest by Chico Police officers.
The media and public will be invited to view the conference and submit questions through Facebook Live during the conference. The conference will also be streamed on the DA s YouTube page.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. The head of the state agency tasked with overseeing California utility companies, including PG&E, has been reappointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Newsom reappointed Marybel Batjer as President of the California Public Utilities Commission on Wednesday, one day before her term was set to end. The appointment requires Senate confirmation. She has led the commission since August 2019, taking over during the agency s investigation of the 2018 Camp Fire.
