Statesboroâs Fourth of July celebration returns this year
Statesboroâs Fourth of July celebration returns this year By Dal Cannady | May 11, 2021 at 4:01 PM EDT - Updated May 11 at 5:38 PM
STATESBORO, Ga. (WTOC) - A huge celebration will return to Statesboro this year. The recreation department says theyâre bringing back the Fourth of July Celebration.
Organizers of Statesboroâs Firecracker Festival say it broke their hearts as much as anyone last year to cancel the event. Now, they hope people are as excited as them to know it is back.
Mill Creek Park has played host to thousands of visitors each July 4 for 30 years. Planners from the Statesboro-Bulloch Co. Parks & Recreation Department say they are tracking local COVID case numbers and feel confident they can hold their open air celebration.
Flagler Beach also canceled its Fourth of July celebration this year.
The Orange City Council during its most recent meeting was presented with three options for celebrating July 4th.
The first option would provide the same setup as in previous years, but with 20 vendors instead of 30. The second option would cancel the watermelon-eating contest and car show; limit vendors to 10; and include singular children s activities, such as a rock wall or a slide. The third option would allow for two vendors selling patriotic items, yard games and more food options, but it would mean canceling the watermelon-eating contest, car show and children s activities.
DeLand s Memorial Day ceremony is going virtual out of an abundance of caution, but residents are invited to celebrate Independence Day in person at the city s annual Firecracker Festival. While the fight against Covid-19 continues and as vaccinations take place across the state and country, the organizer of the annual remembrance in consultation with the city and local veterans organizations deemed it appropriate to hold a virtual ceremony in order to protect our older veterans who normally attend, Chris Graham, city spokesman, said in a news release.
The ceremony, which usually takes place at Bill Dreggors Park, will stream live on May 31 at 10 a.m. on the city s Facebook page and YouTube channel.
