Putnam County to Vaccinate Seniors with NO Comorbidities Written by Putnam County
The Putnam County Department of Health will soon be allowed to administer COVID-19 vaccinations to senior citizens who have no comorbidities, Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell announced Friday, following a meeting with Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s top advisors.
In addition, County Executive Odell announced, the state has promised to significantly increase the county’s vaccine allotment, which means more residents can be vaccinated quickly.
“This is what we have been working toward, the opportunity to dispense as many vaccines as we are allocated, as quickly and as efficiently as possible,” County Executive Odell said. “The sooner we get these vaccines in our residents’ arms, the sooner we get this pandemic behind us, and the sooner we will see our children back in the classroom and our Main Street economy 100% reopen.”

The Putnam County Department of Health will see an increase in its vaccine supply, but not as large an increase as it asked for from the state, according to Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell.
On Friday afternoon, Larry Schwartz, who is leading the state’s vaccination efforts, and Dr. Howard Zucker, the state health commissioner, told county executives statewide to make formal requests for a supply of Pfizer vaccine that local health departments could use to vaccinate seniors without comorbidities. The county executives were told they could request as much vaccine they could store at sub-zero temperatures and administer to the seniors within seven days.

Putnam County officials continue to urge New York State to increase the County’s supply of vaccine. The Putnam County Department of Health reports that they dispense all of the state-supplied doses within 48 hours of receiving them. As of February 16
th, the department has administered 1740 first doses and 907 second doses.
“During H1-N1 we were able to vaccinate 300 people in an hour,” says Supervising Public Health Nurse Kathleen Percacciolo. “Clearly we are capable of vaccinating more residents we just need more vaccines to make that happen.”

County health departments again were expected to receive one-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccinations this week as well as mRNA vaccines that require two doses weeks apart.
In Week 14 of COVID vaccine distribution, pharmacies and Federally Qualified Health Centers were expected to receive the two-dose mRNA vaccines made by Moderna and Pfizer.
People age 60 and over can book vaccine appointments at any location that administers them, including state-run vaccination sites.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo last week said vaccine eligibility would expand as of March 17 to more essential public employees, as will public-facing building workers.
As of March 17, the state would also ease restrictions on who could receive shots from certain vaccine providers. Providers, except for pharmacies, would be able to vaccinate any eligible New Yorker.
