AGP president Atul Bora at Kamalpur in Kamrup district on Sunday
GUWAHATI: Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora on Sunday claimed that if the Congress-AIUDF combine comes to power in the state, the Assamese population “will become a minority in its own land”.
Bora, while participating in the ‘Jatiya Oikya Samarohs’ (national unity conclave) at the Kamalpur in Kamrup district, which is currently held by AGP legislator Satyabrata Kalita, said, “I am very concerned that if the proposed alliance of AIUDF and Congress comes to power in Dispur, the Assamese people will become a minority in their own land. Congress was responsible for safeguarding the illegal immigrants and it had paved away the path for the illegal immigrants to enter through the porous border. This led to the Assam movement.”

Synopsis
The party is in a dilemma over a formal tie up with AIUDF as one section of party leaders feels an alliance would hamper the party s performance in Upper Assam while the other favours a grand alliance having the Badruddin Ajmalled outfit a part of it, if the Congress has to take on the ruling BJP-led front.

AICC general secretary in-charge of Assam Jitendra Singh recently said no decision has been taken regarding tie up with AIUDF, and that alliances are decided by AICC.
Guwahati: The Assam unit of the Congress party has initiated a survey to identify prospective candidates for next year’s assembly polls and also figure out if a pre- poll alliance with the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) would help its fortunes.
GUWAHATI: Senior Congress leader and All India Mahila Congress (AIMC) president Sushmita Dev on Tuesday said the All India Congress Committee (AICC) is in the process of conducting a survey to understand the acceptability of the Congress-AIUDF alliance ahead of the 2021 Assam elections.
Even as state leaders of both parties were keen on forging the alliance for the upcoming assembly polls, Congress high command is extra cautious on the possibility of losing the minority areas to AIUDF, Congress insiders said. While Badruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF is yearning to finalise an alliance with Congress to head the opposition alliance, Congress insiders feel that Sushmita Dev’s latest comments indicated that forming the alliance will be delayed.
