COVID-19 news: Merck drops out of race for COVID vaccines

USA TODAY The decision by U.S. pharmaceutical giant Merck to get out of the COVID-19 vaccine research business should have little direct impact on efforts to vaccinate Americans – and it s proof safety protocols are working, experts say. Developing a vaccine is challenging and laden with failures, so Merck’s announcement Monday that it was giving up development of two COVID-19 vaccines after poor results  wasn’t a complete surprise, said Dennis Carroll, who led the pandemic unit at the federal Agency for International Development for nearly 15 years.  The real surprise, he said, is the success of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines already widely distributed across the U.S.

Paul S. Schulz, M.D. Dr. Schulz received his Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering at University of Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1992 and his medical degree from the University of Louisville in 1999. He continued on with the University of Louisville School of Medicine to complete an internal medicine residency and infectious diseases fellowship in 2005. He remained on faculty until 2007 when he joined a private practice group. In 2010, Dr. Schulz joined Norton Healthcare and currently serves as the system epidemiologist participating in antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention, and employee health. As part of the infectious diseases PGY2 program, he precepts the longitudinal ambulatory infectious diseases rotation and adult infectious diseases consult service. His current area of interest is HIV/hepatitis C co-infection.

Dorothy Jenette Lewis Reed

June 4, 1929 – Nov. 12, 2020 Dorothy was born on June 4, 1929, in Bloomington, Indiana, to Thelman Eugene Lewis, a civil engineer and Flora Margaret Bradford Lewis, a nurse. After high school in Indianapolis, Dorothy studied at Butler University in Indianapolis where she received a Bachelor’s of Science in 1951 and was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. During her senior year at Butler she met a young man from Kentucky named Thomas Graves Reed, Jr. who was studying chemical engineering at Purdue University in West Lafayette. For their second date, Tom took Dorothy across the Wabash River to see a local opera, and that night she was intrigued by the engineer and his artistic interests. For him, an association formed between opera and her that left him with a lifelong love for both.
