Research have established that nitrogenous fertilizer has deleterious effect on soil health and crop productivity if used over a long time. There is also possibility of nitrate contamination in groundwater.
ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) recommends use of both inorganic and organic sources of plant nutrients to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers, preventing deterioration of soil health, environment, and contamination of groundwater.
In first half of the current Budget session of Parliament, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said that the government has launched a National Mission on Soil Health Card to promote soil test based balanced and judicious fertilizer application.
Mizoram Governor P.S. Sreedharan Pillai on Tuesday said that the state government has accorded the highest priority to achieving self-sufficiency, especially in food grains. Addressing the assembly on the first day of the budget session, Pillai said that Mizoram has seen steady progress in the implementation of centrally sponsored schemes and the states flagship programme - Socio-Economic Development Policy (SEDP). He said that oil palm cultivation area has increased to 26,531 hectare, a rise of 2.34 per cent, by the end of 2020. The governor said that under the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North East Region, a Central Sector Scheme, Mizoram has covered 13,000 hectare of land involving 14,104 farmers.

GUWAHATI: Minister of Agriculture Atul Bora on Friday flagged off a fleet of 20 LED screen-mounted vehicles that will display various schemes and projects taken up by the Department in different areas.
The vehicles were inaugurated during a programme held at the Directorate of Agriculture at Khanapara.
During the programme, Bora also distributed 15 tractors and other agricultural equipments that can be taken on rent by farmers from Custom Hiring Centres set up in 16 districts. The tractors and the equipments were distributed under the Mission Organic Value Chain Development scheme which was launched in the year 2016-17.
While the total cost of the 20 LED screen-mounted vehicles is Rs 2 crore, the cost ofthe tractors and other equipments is Rs. 1.6 crore.

North East possesses rich resources of soil and agro-climate making it an ideal region for temperate fruits and spice cultivation. Fruits namely apple, pear, plum, peach are grown semi commercially in the NE-Hill states particularly in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Nagaland, and Meghalaya.
Notably, nowadays Kiwi fruit, walnut, and strawberry cultivation are also extended to new areas with advanced farming techniques.
