SOM Change Your Clocks and Smoke Alarm Batteries this Weekend Media Contact: LARA Communications (517-335-LARA (5272)) Email: mediainfo@michigan.gov March 11, 2021 – As Michiganders move their clocks ahead one hour for daylight saving time this Sunday, LARA Director Orlene Hawks and State Fire Marshal Kevin Sehlmeyer urge Michiganders to adopt the life-saving habits of changing the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. “Testing your fire alarms to make sure they are working properly greatly increases your chance of surviving a home fire,” said Orlene Hawks, the director of the Dept. of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). “Every second counts and smoke alarms provide the warning you and your loved ones need to be able to evacuate safely.”

2020 Live Updates: Coronavirus In The Lansing Region

Nearly a thousand health care workers in Ingham County are getting Pfizer s COVID-19 vaccine every week. Health Officer Linda Vail says so far, the state has provided her department with 975 doses of vaccine a week. They’re getting an extra dose out of some vials. She says the staff and the schedule would allow for more. “We did ask for the double, 1,950 doses this week, and didn’t get it, Vail adds, but we will be asking again, and I’ve also made a few phone calls.” Vail says the department is vaccinating 350 or more people per day, and could double or triple that if they had enough vaccine.

A week to talk about family fire safety in the home | News, Sports, Jobs

Jan 22, 2021 State officials are recommending families review fire safety plans at home during National Community Risk Reduction Week, which started Monday and extends through Sunday. “The number one thing that families should focus on is creating a fire escape plan,” said Orlene Hawks, director of the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. “Develop your plan and then practice it often. If a fire occurs in your home, get out, stay out and then call for help. It is important to teach our family members not to go back inside the house for any reason.” Based on fatal fire data collected by LARA’s Bureau of Fire Services, a total of 123 Michigan residents died in 102 residential home fires in 2020. Most of Michigan’s fire deaths happen overnight, with nearly 50% of fire deaths resulting from fires that started in the living room, 17% of fires that started in the kitchen, and 18% of fires that started in bedrooms.
