State Rep. Aaron Bernstine s bill to extend prison stays for violent prisoners passed the state House on Tuesday.
House Bill 149 (previously House Bill 1855), or Markie s Law, would add 24 months to a prisoner s minimum release date for each conviction of a violent offense while incarcerated, and postpone consideration for parole an additional 12 months for inmates who attempt to escape, smuggle contraband, retaliate or intimidate witnesses.
The House showed overwhelming support for the bill, advancing it to the state Senate in a 144-58 vote.
The bill is named after Mark Mason, an 8-year-old New Castle boy who was allegedly stabbed to death in 2019 by Keith Burley Jr., an Edinburg man then dating Mason s mother.
