LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Graft prompted judge selections

Ohio vehicle registration fees could cost $10 more

Cincinnati Enquirer The cost of registering your car or truck every year in Ohio would go up under a proposal from Gov. Mike DeWine. Ohioans would pay $10 more for motor vehicle registration fees and $2 more for the title fee under DeWine s two-year budget plan unveiled Monday. The registration fee hike would bring in an estimated $127 million each year for the Ohio Department of Public safety, with most of it supporting the State Highway Patrol and some going to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Annual registration fees start at $31 for passenger vehicles before a $5 service fee and local taxes, often $20 or more, are applied. Current fees generate about $466 million a year. The original fee was established years ago to make up for a smaller take from the state gas tax, spokeswoman Kristen Castle said, and hasn t been adjusted for inflation.

Buckfield officials seek legal advice before settling accounts with former tax collector

BUCKFIELD The town is still struggling to close the books with its former tax collector. With the “consideration and discussion of settlement and discharge with tax collector” on its agenda Thursday night, the board requested that Town Manager John Andrews contact the town’s attorney on what their next step should be. The motion, proposed by Martha Catevenis, passed unanimously by the three members, who include Cheryl Coffman and Chairman Tina Brooks. “The term ‘settlement and discharge’ is the standard language used when a tax collector separates from a municipality,” Andrews said on Friday. “Basically it means to settle accounts to make sure everything they were bonded for matches up and then they are discharged from their tax collector duties,” he added.
