Conditions in Whitsundays ease as heavy rain travels north

Premium Content Subscriber only Wild weather has eased in the Whitsundays after flood waters rose across the region on Saturday. Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Michael Paech said showers were hanging around the Whitsundays today but heavier falls were not expected. Rainfall of about 10-40mm was more likely in the area, he said. “We’ve had a lot of intense weather and we are on an easing trend,” Mr Paech said. “We’re looking at showers today, but we shouldn’t see the rainfall figures we’ve seen the last few days. “The more intense rainfall has headed further north of Townsville towards Cairns.”

RAIN COMING: Gladstone set for wet weekend

Premium Content Subscriber only Relief is approaching for residents of the Gladstone region, with hot and humid conditions to make way for rain as the weekend approaches. Bureau of Meteorology Meteorologist Pieter Claassen said conditions would become more inclement thanks to a storm surge in south-east Queensland. “It is mostly going to be shower activity around the Gladstone region, rather than thunderstorms themselves,” Mr Claassen said. “There is a pretty good chance of seeing showers around from Thursday into Friday. “Thursday is a 40 per cent chance and Friday is a 50 per cent chance.” Mr Claassen said there was also a 50 per cent chance of rain on Saturday, however, conditions would ease heading into the start of next week.
