Rajkot: While claiming that no one else from the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay (PDU) hospital (Rajkot civil hospital) was involved in beds-for-cash scam, the city police on Thursday said two arrested persons had managed to get an 85-year-old woman admitted on the bed of a person who succumbed to Covid-19.
Police have arrested Jagdish Solanki (20), an attendant in the Covid ward and Hitesh Mahida (18), a sweeper, after video of the former striking a deal for Rs 9,000 had gone viral on Tuesday.
Detailing the modus operandi, police said Mahida used to look out for beds which got vacated as the patient occupying it died. He then alerted Solanki (20) who would be negotiating with relatives of needy patients outside the hospital.

The Wire based on COVID-19 records at Varanasiâs Harishchandra crematorium, local inputs from the Manikarnika crematorium and rough data from graveyards indicate that at least 50% of deaths due to the disease in the second wave havenât made it to Uttar Pradeshâs official bulletins between April 1 and 15.

Rajkot: Desperation caused by the excruciating wait in long queues is spurring wrong ideas in people’s minds.
On Saturday, crime branch sleuths caught a 24-year-old biotechnology graduate for impersonating an IPS officer to avoid the queues in the state-run Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay (PDU) Hospital and to get privileges during treatment for his relatives.
The arrested person, Sanket Mehta, works as a nutrition officer for a multinational company engaged in the food and beverages business. His relatives were admitted in the civil hospital.
“Mehta searched on Google for the symbol of the national academy that trains IPS officers and copied it. He then made a fake identity card of an IPS officer. He used to identify himself as an IPS officer in the Covid control room of the hospital and get privileged treatment from the staff on duty,” said V K Gadhvi, police inspector, crime branch.
Meanwhile, 45 more people tested positive in Rajkot city on Thursday.
RAJKOT: Ten first-year MBBS students of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay (PDU) Medical College, Rajkot, have tested positive for coronavirus infection on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The college dean called an urgent meeting and suspended offline education for a week for the rest of 190 students.
The nine male students and one female found infected have been shifted to the Covid care hospital and are being treated by the senior doctors. Hospital sources claimed that they have mild symptoms.
Contact tracing has been done all other students who came in their contact have tested negative. The college administration also initiated the process to administer vaccines to the students.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday ordered the suspension of 11 officials and transfer of seven others for alleged dereliction of duty, a state government spokesperson said.
Those suspended include Station Officers of Purandarpur and Farenda police stations. Sub-divisional magistrate of Nautanwa has also been suspended, the spokesperson said.
