Climate change is dangerous and disorienting. But building new relationships with the landscapes around us will allow us to survive and give the other species we still share this planet with the chance to thrive.

When ecologist Craig Allen looks across the brown, grassy shrub lands on the east flank of the Jemez Mountains in northern New Mexico, he feels no satisfaction that he was right.

In May 2000, a planned burn to remove dead, dried underbrush on New Mexico’s drought-stricken Cerro Grande peak in the Bandelier National Monument grew out of control. As the sky darkened with smoke, a wall of flames fueled by high winds burned through tens of thousands of acres of land where people, elk, and bald eagles made their homes. The monstrous blaze escaped the monument’s containment line and headed to the forested birthplace of the atomic bomb Los Alamos National Laboratory. There, it raced over soil, rocks, and trees contaminated from decades-old nuclear weapons testing, releasing radioactive particles into the air and setting 47 buildings ablaze. As the devastation unfolded, the wildfire inched close to, but stopped short of, a facility containing tritium, a radioactive form of hydrogen.

Bandelier Marks National Park Week With Fee Free Day
BANDELIER News:
Bandelier National Monument and other National Park Service areas will waive entrance fees Saturday, April 17 to celebrate the start of National Park Week 2021.
Fee free days provide an opportunity to explore Bandelier or another national park for the first time or visit an old favorite. Entrance fee waivers do not apply to expanded amenity fees such as camping.
Every April, during the presidentially proclaimed National Park Week, the National Park Service joins with the National Park Foundation, the official charity of America’s national parks, to celebrate America’s treasures. National Park Week is a time to explore amazing places, discover stories of history and culture, volunteer, and find your park.
