Here's what Landis Valley museum, Ephrata Cloister and the PA Railroad Museum have planned for reopening on April 30

Pennsylvania’s state-run historic sites and museums will re-open Friday, April 30. Over the past year, staff have worked behind closed doors to maintain historic buildings and collections. In a few weeks, they’ll welcome the public back. Because of COVID-19, there will be plenty of changes, from what’s open to what activities will return. Face masks are required indoors and when near others outdoors. Visitors also are asked to stay six feet from people not in their household. They’ll be asked to wash or sanitize hands at the site’s entrance. Here’s more about what’s happening at the three historic sites in Lancaster County that are run by the The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission.

At the Crossroads: Landis Valley House Hotel Was a Community Hub

It was a restaurant, a bar, a post office, a place for auctioning and boarding livestock, a weighing station, a polling place, a social center and, for most of its history, a provider of lodging. Long before the era of chain hotels with lookalike rooms and free Wi-Fi, the Landis Valley House Hotel in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, was a destination offering hospitality to both travelers and locals. Constructed and initially operated by Jacob Landis Jr. from 1856 to 1860, the Landis Valley House Hotel was strategically located at the intersection of the Reading Road, New Haven Road and Neffsville Road — the perfect spot for a tavern that offered food, drink and accommodations for weary travelers as well as a gathering spot for its rural neighbors.

Lancaster FFA Group Grows Greenhouse Starters for Spring

Early May is ground zero for do-it-yourself gardeners. It’s when everyone looks for healthy, starter plants to fill their vegetable and herb gardens. Getting plants into the soil around Mother’s Day has always been a key date for local gardeners in the MidAtlantic region. During the year 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic kept people quarantined at home to stop the spread of infections, many garden centers actually sold out of flowering plants, ground cover and, especially, vegetable plants. Families staying close to home with pandemic safety guidelines took to gardening to keep them occupied. In Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, along with garden centers, greenhouses and farm stands, one popular place to purchase starter plants was at the Herb and Garden Faire at the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum.
