Farmer and vet opinions on antibiotics wanted in cross-border project

SHARING OPTIONS: By 2030, sales of antimicrobials for farmed animals are to be reduced by 50%. / Donal O Leary Farmers and vets working in the dairy, pig, beef and sheep sectors on the island of Ireland are being asked to complete a survey to provide their views on how antibiotics are used in agriculture. As part of OneHealth, efforts to address the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance, legislative and policy changes are being introduced at European and national level centred on agricultural antibiotic use. The European Commission’s Farm to Fork strategy has set a 2030 target of reducing sales of antimicrobials for farmed animals and in aquaculture by 50%, while the EU will introduce new regulations in 2022 on veterinary medicinal products and medicated feed.

EU launches zero-pollution plan for air, water and soil

The European Commission adopted the EU action plan Towards zero pollution for air, water and soil on 12 May. This action plan is part of the European green deal and sets a target of reduced pollution levels, which are no longer harmful to human health and natural ecosystems. The plan pulls in other European policies, such as the Farm to Fork Strategy, which plans to reduce fertiliser use by 20% and pesticide use by 50%. It plans to fill gaps in legislation and identify areas where better implementation is needed. Key targets The action plan sets out key targets to 2030: Improving air quality to reduce the number of premature deaths caused by air pollution by 55%.

They also exchanged views on global challenges related to the fight against hunger and all forms of malnutrition, the need to preserve biodiversity and natural resources, as well as the importance of food safety and the One-Health approach for the prevention of pandemics.
