April 6, 2021, Mountain View, CA - The SETI Institute has named Dan Werthimer and Paul Horowitz as recipients of the 2021 Drake Award.
The award, named after Frank Drake, the astronomer who conducted the first modern experiment to seek extraterrestrial intelligence, honors those scientists and engineers who have made substantial contributions to the search for and understanding of life beyond Earth.
The 2021 Drake Awards mark the first time this SETI Institute award has simultaneously recognized the achievements of two people, a testament to the extraordinary contributions each has made to SETI Research. It s a tremendous honor to receive this award in Frank s name, said Werthimer, who is Chief Scientist at the Berkeley SETI Research Center. He was a huge and inspiring influence on my life and was the one who enticed me into SETI work. If it weren t for Frank, I would have been rich. MythBusters Revisited: Tory Belleci on Facing His Worst Nightmare and His Jackass Moment
When the initial episodes of
MythBusters debuted on the Discovery Channel, no one could have anticipated the phenomenon that it would ignite and or that it would lead to hundreds of episodes over more than a decade. As attention towards the series grew, as did the scope of the myths being tested, requiring hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman to enlist some of their trusted collaborators to help them realize their ambitious ideas. This also resulted in the series adding a trio of all-new hosts, with Tory Belleci, Kari Byron, and Grant Imahara being deemed The Build Team, who not only frequently worked with the series leads, but would also handle myths of their own.
MythBusters Revisited: Adam Savage on Why He ll Be Forever Grateful for the Series
✖
In 2002, Discovery Channel began developing a series that aimed to shine a light on a number of urban legends, putting science and physics to the test to determine if the tall tales could have actually happened. The series, which would go on to be named MythBusters, enlisted the help of two special effects artists to produce three episodes, exploring stories of combining Pop Rocks with soda, if too many poppy seeds could cause one to fail a drug test, or if a man could attach enough helium balloons to a lawn chair to take flight. The series, hosted by Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, would go on to be so successful, it would run for 13 years, film nearly 300 episodes, and become a worldwide phenomenon in the world of educational entertainment. The original run of the series concluded five years ago, in March of 2016.
