Councilor wants safety proven before moving water trail to Snake River

ONTARIO A recreational water trail for the city of Ontario that was still in the concept phase will be moved elsewhere than originally planned at the urging of the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. City Manager Adam Brown credits “good research” by the Argus Observer in moving the project. The newspaper reached out to the state agency following a report from the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board in March that detailed the Malheur River as having the second-worst quality in the state, according to the Oregon DEQ’s rating. After responding to the newspaper, an official with the Oregon DEQ called Brown, he reported to the Ontario City Council during its work session on April 8. He explained that the concerns were over bacteria levels in the river that, as the agency detailed to the newspaper, are often “above levels for safe contact recreation.”

Little Dixie Fire District honors its volunteers

Tyler Shaw leaned back in his chair and let the announcement sink in. He had just been named as Little Dixie Fire Protection District’s Firefighter of the Year for 2020 and accepted the award with his son Lucas by his side. “It means quite a bit to me,” Shaw said after Saturday night’s awards dinner, held at the 4-H Center in Mexico. The district took the opportunity to recognize Shaw and 10 others at the annual event. Normally scheduled for fall, the banquet had been put on hold by the pandemic. Fire Chief Bill Albus explained that COVID-19 made 2020 a difficult year. Regular training sessions were postponed or cancelled, and that led to a waiting list of volunteers.

COVID-19 test positivity rate and cases are rising

MALHEUR COUNTY  Malheur County’s COVID-19 cases and test positivity rates are on the rise, according to a weekly Risk Levels Summary released by the Governor’s Office this week. During the two-week period from March 28 to April 10, there were 24 new cases reported, for a case rate (number of cases per 100,000 people) of 74.9. The test positivity rate was 5.1%. Both rates would qualify Malheur County, currently in the Lower Risk category, to move to Moderate Risk if they had occurred during the two weeks leading up to a Movement Week instead of a Warning Week, and if counties weren’t given a two-week caution period meant to keep those that moved down in risk level during the previous movement period from experiencing a yo-yo effect.
