In anticipation of a verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial, Northern Michigan E3 planned a vigil in support of justice Tuesday.
The group gathered in open space park in Traverse City, about an hour after the guilty verdict came in.
Members say that the guilty verdict gave them a collective sigh of relief, but was ultimately bittersweet at the loss of George Floyd. The group says they, along with other groups across the country, will continue their advocacy efforts to bring about police reform that works for all people.
“How do we come back to, or progress I should say, to a place where law enforcement is a community organization, you know is something that works with the people in the community to keep it safe,” Northern Michigan E3 council member Holly Bird said. “I think that we are seeing that start all over and we’re doing our part for our region.”
