Bad Politicians Should Be Held Accountable by the American People

Kent Nishimura / Los Angeles Times via Getty Images After the Capitol attack, many corporations pulled funding from politicians who supported Trump.  Some of the companies are already changing course, showing that it was likely a PR stunt.  Americans cannot rely on corporations to speak for them. Congress needs to pass the For the People Act to amplify Americans voices.  Eric Lutz writes for Vanity Fair and the Guardian, among other publications. This is an opinion column. The NRA’s grassroots clout – via the Internet, letters, phone and other tools – coupled with the influence wielded by millions of other gun owners, keep many Republican allies fighting almost reflexively against gun curbs, notwithstanding recent NRA problems including electoral setbacks, staff cuts, drops in member dues revenue and legal threats, according to analysts.

Foreign billionaire conspired to violate election law in straw donor scheme

Gilbert Chagoury (Alexandra Wyman/WireImage) A Lebanese-Nigerian billionaire agreed to pay the U.S. government $1.8 million to resolve allegations that he conspired to violate federal election laws in a “straw donor” scheme to route illegal foreign contributions to U.S. presidential and congressional candidates, the Justice Department announced Wednesday. Gilbert Chagoury, a foreign national prohibited by federal law from making contributions to political groups or campaigns to influence U.S. elections, routed approximately $180,000 to the campaign committees of four U.S. candidates through straw donors over the course of three election cycles. He admitted the funds were intended to support candidates and was aware the contributions were made by giving his money under the name of another individual as illegal conduit contributions, according to court records.
