Judiciary Workers’ Strike: CJN meets with JUSUN leaders again The CJN tells the judiciary union leaders that he cannot fault their reasons for going on strike. ADVERTISEMENT The leaders of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), on Thursday, met with the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Tanko Muhammad, over the union’s lingering strike that has crippled all Nigerian courts for 17 days. Members of the union had embarked on the nationwide strike to press home their demand for the implementation of the constitutional provision that confers financial independence on the judiciary. Thursday’s meeting was the second the CJN would be having with the union leaders after the first one he held with them on the day the strike began.

By Alex Enumah Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Muhammad, has said that the strike embarked on by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) is legal since it is aimed at realizing their constitutionally guaranteed rights. The CJN stated this Wednesday when some members of the striking judiciary workers led by the Union’s Deputy National President Emmanuel Abioye, visited him to report the position of the Union on the ongoing strike. JUSUN had asked its members to proceed on indefinite strike pending when state governments obey the constitutional provisions of financial autonomy of the Judiciary. The Union had in March gave a 21-day ultimatum but was not heeded by the government.

National officials of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) have vowed that its ongoing nationwide strike would not be called off until state governors meet their demands. JUSUN made the assertion at a meeting with the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad The meeting held at the CJN’s chambers in Supreme Court was to give him feedback on his request for the strike to be called off. The Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Hadjia Hadiza Uwani Mustapha also attended the meeting. The CJN had, at an earlier meeting with JUSUN leaders on April 6, asked the union to call off the strike given its adverse effect on the justice system in the country.
