New south Essex areas added to Covid hotspots map

Several parts of south Essex have been added to the Covid hotspots map following a small rise in cases across the region. It comes amid growing speculation the final easing of lockdown – and removal of all restrictions – could be delayed by a few weeks. The Thurrock district is currently recorded the highest number of new cases in south Essex with 30 confirmed in the week ending June 3. There were 27 in Southend, 20 in Basildon, and 11 in both Castle Point and Rochford. Only Southend saw a drop in cases in that period. The latest hotspots map for south Essex A closer look at the Covid hotspots map shows there are now 11 areas currently highlighted, with recording an infection rate above 100 cases per 100, 000 people.

Southend Basildon: Latest food hygiene ratings for our firms

New food hygiene ratings for cafes, restaurants and outlets across Basildon and Southend have been published by the Food Standards Agency. Premises across the city are rated by the Food Standards Agency, based on the findings of local authority inspectors, who work all year round. The hygiene standards found at the time of inspection are then rated on a scale. Five is top of the scale, meaning the hygiene standards are very good and fully comply with the law. Zero is at the bottom of the scale, meaning urgent improvement is necessary. Mental Health Unit Kitchen at Basildon Hospital has been rated four following the inspection on March 6.

These are the historic attacks on churches in south Essex

The Echo revealed in Wednesday’s paper how vandals had smashed a window and destroyed a war memorial at All Saints Orthodox Church in Benfleet. But sadly, such acts of sacrilege are far from unique. Back in 1962 there was a spate of attacks on churches in south Essex that led to one of the black-hearted culprits being dubbed the “hooded phantom”. In February 1962 a tiny isolated church in Bowers Gifford was targeted when a crook stole the £100 altar cross. The rector of St Margaret’s Church discovered the cross was missing when he went to the church for Evensong on a Tuesday evening.
