The U.S. State Department is updating its travel guidance “to better reflect CDC’s science-based Travel Health Notices.”
April 22, 2021
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to pose unprecedented risks to travelers. In light of those risks, the Department of State strongly recommends U.S. citizens reconsider all travel abroad. As travelers face ongoing risks due to the COVID-19 pandemic,
the Department of State has updated its Travel Advisories this week to better reflect the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) science-based Travel Health Notices that outline current issues affecting travelers’ health.
Our Advisories also take into account logistical factors, including in-country testing availability and current travel restrictions for U.S. citizens.
This update resulted in a significant increase in the number of countries at Level 4: Do Not Travel, to approximately 80% of countries worldwide. This does not imply a reassessment of the current health situation in a given country, but rather reflects an adjustment in the State Department’s Travel Advisory system to rely more on CDC

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, this week over 100 countries and other areas have been added to the U.S. State Department s Level 4: Do Not Travel category, the department s highest advisory level due to greater likelihood of life-threatening risks.
That leaves around 50 countries in the lower-level categories, with only Bhutan currently at Level 1, the lowest advisory level where travelers are told to exercise normal precautions.
There are 15 countries in the Level 2 category where Americans are told to exercise increased caution, while 35 countries come with a Level 3 warning advising travelers to reconsider travel.
Most countries are red as per the US State Dept s website map
The US State Department has updated its travel advisory system, listing almost 80% of the world s countries as red or do not travel, following guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention given the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, it was announced.
This measure represents a return to old State Department practices. The US has not had a global advisory warning against international travel since August when it was revoked by former President Donald Trump.
The system consists of four categories of destination countries: Blue: Exercise normal precautions; Ocre: Exercise increased caution; Orange: Reconsider travel; Red: Do Not Travel.
