Travel agency owner pleads guilty to defrauding agents nationwide

Anders Folk. According to court documents, Matthew Harold Schumacher, 45, was owner and operator of Travel Troops, LLC, and Vacation Agent Nation, LLP, which were host travel agencies based in Waseca, Minnesota. Through his businesses, Schumacher purported to provide host travel services to independent travel agents throughout the United States in exchange for a monthly fee. Schumacher represented that his host travel business was a reliable and profitable means for his fee-paying travel agents to receive higher commission rates from travel industry suppliers, such as airlines, resorts, and cruise companies, than if the individual travel agents booked their customers’ travel arrangements. Harald Schumacher was charged with four counts of wire fraud in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday. Through his companies, Schumacher would provide travel services to independent travel agents for a fee, prosecutors said. Travel agents working with him could then receive a commission from services like airlines when they booked through his companies.

Authorities say Schumacher was the owner and operator of Travel Troops,  and Vacation Agent Nation, which were host travel agencies based in Waseca. He allegedly offered to provide travel services to independent agents throughout the country in exchange for a monthly fee and promised higher commission rates from airlines, resorts, and cruise companies. Instead, according to the indictment, he kept $484,000 in commission payments owed to the agents.
