Lightweight wind turbines could bring hydrogen production home

Lightweight wind turbines could bring hydrogen production home 04 May 2021 Professional Engineering The small and efficient wind turbines in development at Fraunhofer IAP and partners could enable hydrogen production at home (Credit: Fraunhofer IAP) Members of the public could one day produce and use hydrogen at home thanks to lightweight, efficient wind turbines and safe storage tanks. Both technologies are under development in Germany, at a partnership of lightweight construction experts from the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research (IAP), BTU Cottbus and an industrial partner. The systems could provide hydrogen for heat and power at home, or fuel for cars.

Hydrogen Power Plant For The Garden

Hydrogen Power Plant For The Garden The idea is that private customers will, in the future, be able to produce the hydrogen they need using small wind turbines. Lightweight construction ex perts at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP, at BTU Cottbus and an industrial partner are now developing the key technologies re quired: small, efficient rotors and safe tanks. According to data from the German Environment Agency, private households currently are responsible for about a quarter of Germany s energy consumption in total. A good half of this energy is obtained from natural gas and crude oil. Considering the intensifying climate change, this statistic is a sobering one. “Hydrogen obtained from renewable energies has so much more potential as an energy carrier for the future,” says Prof. Holger Seidlitz, lightweight construction specialist at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg and Head of “Polymer Materials and Composite PYCO” research at the Fraunhofer Institute f
