Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal spoke in an interview with Interfax about how to protect household gas consumers amid growing market prices, the outlook for renewable energy and expectations from American partners on the eve of Joe Biden’s inauguration.
Question: What actions is the government leaning toward in regard to reducing or curbing the growth of prices for gas, electricity, heat and water for household consumers?
Answer: We have a free market for gas, including for household consumers, so the price is set by the market. Any market in any country is seasonal – in the summer gas is cheap because consumption decreases, and in winter it goes up in price because demand grows. We stand by the principles that we have a gas market, we won’t retreat from this. We won’t return
The Cabinet of Ministers has fixed a price of natural gas at UAH 6.99, or US$0.25 per cubic meter for households in Ukraine as of February until the end of the heating season. Some households will see a 40% reduction.

Energoatom to send most of UAH 5.1 bln received from Guaranteed Buyer for pay to Westinghouse, other suppliers – president 2 min read
National Nuclear Generating Company Energoatom will use most of the approximately UAH 5.1 billion that will be received from state-owned enterprise Guaranteed Buyer as debt repayment for fuel to Westinghouse and other suppliers, acting President of Energoatom Petro Kotin has said. The funds received will mainly go to pay off debts to our suppliers, including paying for fuel to Westinghouse, he wrote on his Facebook page on Sunday.
