For years, if sexual assault survivors in Cumberland County sought care, they could count on going to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, where the hospital’s highly trained and certified sexual assault nurse examiners would provide treatment and gather the forensic evidence needed for law enforcement to build a criminal case against their attacker.
About a year ago, advocates for sexual assault survivors noticed a staffing change, said Deanne Gerdes, executive director of Rape Crisis of Cumberland County.

Cape Fear Valley Medical Center started administering the COVID-19 vaccine Tuesday to hospital workers who are caring for patients with the virus.
Kimberly Roberson, a registered nurse who works in the hospital’s COVID unit, was the first to receive the vaccine. Other healthcare workers and hospital administrators clapped and cheered after Heather McLeod, a pharmacist at Cape Fear Valley, gave Roberson a shot in her upper right arm.
Roberson said she is proud to be the first to get the vaccine, but also is proud of other workers at the hospital. She said helping patients who have the virus played a major role in her decision to get the vaccine.
