Some minority-serving campuses in North Carolina receive ultra-cold freezers to distribute COVID-19 vaccines to communities

More ultra-cold freezers are on the way to help store the COVID-19 vaccine, more specifically, historically minority-serving universities around the state including North Carolina Central and Fayetteville State University. NC Central will get seven freezers as part of the broader effort to increase cold storage capacity. The university will then give them to places like the Halifax or Granville Health Department or even the Lumbee Tribe to use. Four other historically minority-serving institutions in the UNC System including Elizabeth City State University, North Carolina A&T University, UNC Pembroke and Winston-Salem State University received a mobile freezer Wednesday that s capable of safely storing and moving COVID-19 vaccine vials. Those already delivered are a portion of the 62 slated to arrive in the coming months as part of Operation Deep Freeze.

Fayetteville leaders react to Joe Biden inauguration

Joe Biden will become the 46th president of the United States today during a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol. He is scheduled to take the oath of office at noon. Biden becomes president during one of the more tumultuous times in the nation’s history. The country is facing a pandemic caused by COVID-19, rough economic conditions after businesses lost customers and employees lost jobs, and racial tensions related to how law enforcement officers treat Black people. The situation intensified Jan. 6, when a mob incited by President Donald Trump attempted an insurrection at the Capitol while lawmakers were working to certify Biden’s election. Trump has baselessly claimed that he won the election.

Kamala Harris steps into vice presidential role with unique strengths

WASHINGTON  Since Joe Biden selected Kamala Harris as his running mate, the California senator has been a mainstay at the president-elect s side. She has stood with Biden as he announced Cabinet appointments. She has received national security briefings and COVID-19 briefings alongside him. And both vice presidential historians and political activists expect Harris will continue to serve as Biden s right-hand woman after being sworn in as vice president on Jan. 20. “The way she s approaching the vice presidency is very similar to the way Joe Biden approached the vice presidency with Barack Obama,” Harris press secretary Sabrina Singh told USA TODAY. “She s walking into this office as a full governing partner to Joe Biden and is completely aligned and supportive of his priorities.
