The nurses have been assisting in the “all hands on deck” effort to vaccinate as many residents as possible.

By John Heinis/Hudson County View At 12:58 p.m. today, the Bayonne Fire Department was dispatched to 155 W 29th Street for a reported fire. Arriving units found fire in an apartment on the 2nd floor of the three-story, multi-unit apartment building, Bartos said in a statement. Firefighters used a hand line to extinguish the blaze within minutes of their arrival. One tenant was treated for minor smoke inhalation on the scene by McCabe Ambulance and refused further treatment. A fire investigation is being conducted, however, the blaze does not appear to be suspicious in nature. The Bayonne Building Department responded and deemed that one apartment would be temporarily uninhabitable.

Active COVID-19 cases decline in Bayonne for first time in months

× COVID-19 cases have decreased for the first time in nearly eleven weeks. As of Dec. 17, there were 239 active cases, according to the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management (OEM). This is a decrease in 106 cases since Dec. 10. Another resident has died: an 86-year-old woman. OEM said that 3,012 residents tested positive, regardless of where that test was given, as of Dec. 17. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 88 Bayonne residents have died, and 2,685 have recovered. COVID-19 hospitalizations at BMC remain low because most residents recover at home. There were 20 COVID-19 patients at BMC as of Dec. 17. OEM does not have data on Bayonne residents in hospitals other than BMC.

Mayor James Davis has advised Bayonne residents to prepare for Winter Storm Gail, expected on Wednesday, Dec. 16, and Thursday, Dec. 17. Heavy winds and significant snowfall are expected. “There is potential for over a foot of snow for Bayonne along with very strong winds,” Davis said in a robo-call to the city. “Yesterday, I met with all city department heads to ensure our readiness, and I initiated our snow emergency plan.” He continued: “Once the snow starts falling, our DPW crews will be out in force to plow and salt our streets. In order for these crews to perform their work, I ask that everyone please refrain from driving during the storm, as this will help them get their job done properly.”
