BART and the CCJPA have unveiled a rail improvement program called Link21.
BART
The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) and Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) have unveiled Link21, a rail improvement program, and a new website that outlines the program’s objectives. Link21 will connect BART and Regional Rail (including intercity, commuter and high-speed passenger rail) while also connecting people sustainably to employment opportunities and affordable housing throughout the 21-county northern California Megaregion.
Link21, formerly known as the New Transbay Rail Crossing, is a program of various projects that will provide more services, faster connections, and better access to jobs for the Megaregion’s travelers.

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) has begun a project to replace track components at the agency’s Richmond Station. Replacement of an interlocking is the focus of the project. As most readers know, an interlocking is a section of track that functions like an intersection for cars by allowing trains to safely move from one line to the other. BART has replaced interlockings at five other stations.
Voters in Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Francisco counties approved a $3.5 billion bond measure in 2016 that is funding the work. The goal is to rebuild BART to make the system safer and more reliable.
DART 2020: A Look Back Written by Marybeth Luczak, Executive Editor
In September, 50 1,500-foot-long rail segments were delivered for DART’s 26-mile Silver Line Regional Rail Project under construction between Plano, Texas, and DFW Airport. Steel Dynamics, Inc. in Columbia City, Ind., shipped them by train to Richardson. The new alignment is slated for revenue service in 2023.
2020 has been a difficult year for transit agencies and railroads across the country. But for nearly every one, there were bright spots from dedicated employees serving on the front lines to new initiatives improving the rider experience. Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) in Texas has shared highlights of its achievements throughout the year.
The year 2020 has been fraught with many challenges, from impassioned protests in the streets demanding equality for African Americans, to a complete shut-down of the country to curb the spread of COVID-19. For KAI, however, there was cause to celebrate in 2020, as one of the country’s largest minority-owned design and build firms marked its 40
th anniversary.
“While we may not have been able to celebrate our milestone anniversary the way we had initially planned due to the pandemic, we celebrate every day knowing that our projects are making a difference in lives and communities, just as they have for the past 40 years,” said KAI CEO Michael Kennedy, Jr.
