According to Reuters, a Department of Justice spokesperson said late Friday that it was deeply disappointed with the decision not to file charges, a move Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador publicly supported earlier in the day. In a brief statement in response to the decision, the Justice Department said, The United States reserves the right to recommence its prosecution of Cienfuegos if the Government of Mexico fails to do so.
