Kalimera! Let me start by saying what a great honor it is for me to welcome the U.S. Coast Guard Fast Response Cutters Robert Goldman and Charles Moulthrope to the port of Piraeus.
These two cutters have just completed a historic transatlantic voyage that I think would have made the founder of the U.S. Coast Guard, Alexander Hamilton, very proud, as they proceeded en route to their new homeport in Bahrain where they will operate with the U.S. Navy’s 5
th Fleet.
I want to thank my friend Minister Plakiotakis and Vice Admiral Kliaris for joining me to welcome these U.S. Coast Guard cutters to Greece.

Greek Defence Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos briefed his U.S. counterpart Lloyd Austin on Thursday about Turkey’s behaviour in the eastern Mediterranean in 2020.
Prior to the phone call, which reportedly took place at Austin’s request, the U.S. secretary of defence had also talked to his Turkish counterpart, Hulusi Akar.
Panagiotopoulos reportedly gave Austin a detailed account of Greek-Turkish relations, pointing out the effects Ankara’s behaviour could have on the cohesion of the NATO alliance and the security situation in the eastern Mediterranean.
The two ministers also expressed their common intention to expand and deepen the existing Mutual Defence Cooperation Agreement.

US and Greece military forces, with Greece and Turkey about to sit down to resume talks aimed at reducing tension, combined for an exercise in the Mediterranean, where Turkey plans to hunt for energy off Greek islands.
The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier in the sea was the center of the maneuvers and gave the Greek side the chance to work with the United States’ military and naval might.
The Hellenic National Defense General Staff (GEETHA) said it also planned aeronautical exercises with the American forces to increase combat capabilities of the units and improve coordination between the allies.
ATHENS: Greek authorities are not being naive about their exploratory talks with Turkey but they “will not fall in the trap to undermine the dialogue” by withdrawing from it, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said last week. His comments came as Ankara faced criticism from some quarters that it was acting provocatively toward Athens on a number of fronts. The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs had proposed to Ankara that the next round of exploratory talks on the maritime boundary dispute between the two countries take place between March 1 and 5. However, Turkey failed to reply to the invitation. If the meeting does eventually go ahead it will be the 62nd round of the talks, which began 2002 but broke down in 2016 when Ankara froze discussions. Negotiations resumed in January this year amid pressure from the EU, and Germany in particular, to defuse escalating tensions in the eastern Mediterranean.
