Air New Zealand has been using its 787-9 to service long haul routes. “It also provides Kiwis that are wanting to return home after October 31 some certainty around when we intend to operate in order for them to secure their MIQ spaces.” In March last year Air New Zealand announced significant capacity reductions across its network as a result of the impact of Covid-19 on travel. Long haul network reductions included the suspension of flights between Auckland and Chicago, San Francisco, Houston, Vancouver, Tokyo, Honolulu, Denpasar and Taipei.

Air New Zealand enters new cargo route
Air New Zealand cargo flights between Melbourne and Los Angeles will soon be taking off after the airline was awarded the route as part of the Australian Government’s International Freight Assistance Mechanism (IFAM) programme.
The airline will operate one flight per week until 31 October 2021, with the first flight bound for Melbourne on 3 July. This will be in addition to the Brisbane – Los Angeles flying the airline has been doing since August 2020 under the same scheme.
Air New Zealand General Manager Cargo Anna Palairet says this will be the first time the airline has flown the route, and with the limited international flying currently happening, adding a new route to the mix is positive.

Air New Zealand will delay taking delivery of more Boeing 787s for at least a year, as the carrier expects to plunge deeper into the red for its full-year financial results.
In a profit guidance issued on 18 June, the carrier expects full-year, pre-tax losses before signfiicant items to be not more than NZ$450 million ($315 million) - the carrier’s 2021 financial year ends on 30 June. This compares to the NZ$87 million loss it made in the previous year its first loss in 18 years.

It also expects a dismal 2022 financial year, with losses on par with 2021.
