Gonsalves: Multilateralism critical

Social Share United Nations – St Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves says the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has laid bare the reality that a renewed multilateralism remains “an urgent moral, political and existential Imperative”. In a virtual address to the United Nations Security Council on upholding multilateralism, Gonsalves, who is also his country’s Foreign Affairs Minister, said the principles of multilateralism are “under-girded by the UN Charter principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence”. Speaking on the topic, “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Upholding Multilateralism and the United Nations-centered International System”, Gonsalves noted that, amid the severe health, socioeconomic, political and security implications of COVID-19, states are still required to contend with the “ever-intensifying hazards of climate change; the continued spread of terrorism and organised crime;

The Foreign secretary reminded that today s world model can only be addressed with an updated system. He also highlighted India s enhanced efforts towards upholding multilateralism. Harsh Vardhan Shringla remarked that the UN s top contributors can deliver effective solutions only if they are given a chance rather than zealously guarding the status quo of the mighty as it warned that the narrow representation and privileges of a few poses a great challenge to its authenticity.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi chaired a high-level meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Friday, calling for win-win cooperation to practice true multilateralism.   Under the initiative of China, the rotating presidency of the UNSC this month, the UNSC held the meeting on Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Upholding Multilateralism and the UN-centered International System via video link.     Firstly, all parties should pursue win-win cooperation, not zero-sum game. All countries should conduct dialogue and cooperation on the basis of equality and mutual respect. No country should expect others to lose, but should strive to win together with other countries to achieve universal security and common prosperity.
